2008-09 OCAA MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - CHARLEY SPURR

Charly Spurr was simply lights out this season for the Algonquin Thunder men's basketball team, leading his team to a provincial silver medal on his home court in Ottawa.

During the regular season, the third-year guard ranked third in the OCAA in total points, averaging 22 points per game and sat second overall in three-pointers made, averaging 3.3 three-point field goals per game. In the OCAA all-star game it was that long range shooting ability that brought fans to their feet when the Ottawa native caught fire and hit 20 of a possible 25 shots, subsequently earning him the three-point shootout championship title.

Although Spurr's regular season was impressive, it was his post-season that allowed him to shine even more. Leaving Ontario with a silver medal, the performance was good enough to earn his team a CCAA national championship wild card berth. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Spurr and his teammates achieved the near impossible, earning a CCAA national bronze medal after being seeded seventh in the tournament. This was also just the second time in the history of the Algonquin Thunder program a men's basketball team had won a national medal, earning silver in 2002 in Nova Scotia. Charly was twice honoured with the player of the game award and was also named a CCAA tournament first-team all-star.

Accolades have poured in for Spurr this season as he was named the OCAA men's basketball player of the year, a CCAA all-Canadian and an OCAA league and tournament all-star.

Off the court, Spurr is described as a focused, hard working and humble person who also spends time volunteering with community programs such as the Algonquin Thunder Summer Camp for kids and Rautins House to name a few.
