2002-03 OCAA MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - JOEY MARTINS

Joey Martins has been an integral member of the Loyalist Lancers men's volleyball team for the past two seasons and joined the Lancers men's soccer team this season.

His volleyball resume for his two seasons in the OCAA is long and outstanding. He has led the Lancers to two consecutive OCAA championships, two straight OCAA East region championships, a CCAA silver medal and CCAA bronze medal.

Individually, Joey is a two-time CCAA all-Canadian, a two-time CCAA championship first-team all-star, two-time OCAA East region all-star, OCAA championship most valuable player, OCAA championship all-star, East region scoring champion and three-time OCAA athlete of the week.

Loyalist men's volleyball coach Chris Carson had this to say about Joey. "Joey's selection as OCAA athlete of the year is a well deserved honour. Not only is he a tremendous athlete (competing in two sports and excelling in both), but I don't know of a finer person that the OCAA could showcase, as Joey exemplifies sportsmanship, integrity, a strong will to compete, and he is someone who humbly receives and honours that are presented to him."

Loyalist College athletic director Greg Gavin remarked, "We at Loyalist are delighted to have Joey Martins recognized with this award. We have never had a more talented athlete or finer individual than this young man compete for our school. Young people like Joey Martins remind us of all that is good with college sport - a fierce competitor, a humble winner, a dignified loser - a quality set of values."
