2002-03 OCAA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR - STACEY MICHAELS

In one season with the Cambrian Golden Shield badminton team, Stacey Michaels has managed to show herself as a dominant force on the court. In the 2002-03 season Stacey and her partner Glendon Thomas have won the CCAA mixed doubles championship, CCAA overall team bronze, OCAA championship, OCAA team championship and OCAA East region championship. Other accolades include being named a CCAA all-Canadian and an OCAA athlete of the week. Her academic accomplishments are just as impressive, as Stacey was named a CCAA academic all-Canadian and OCAA all-academic.

Prior to attending Cambrian, Stacey spent two years at Mount Royal College in Calgary. While there, she captured two Alberta conference women's doubles badminton championships and two CCA women's doubles badminton titles.

Cambrian College athletic director Bob Piche noted, "Stacey Michaels can only be described as a complete student-athlete. A perfectionist, she applies her many talents to everything that she is involved in and has committed countless hours of hard work to achieve her accomplishments to date. A perfect 4.00 GPA student, an amazing athletic talent, and now OCAA female athlete of the year, a very fitting award for a very deserving individual. Cambrian is indeed very fortunate to have a quality person such as Stacey involved in our program."

"Stacey is an excellent team player in an extremely individualized sport. She encourages her teammates to succeed and is always willing to help them train and develop. As a person she is very friendly and has numerous friends throughout the badminton circuit, and the entire country. Stacey values these friendships she has made and makes every effort to maintain them. Stacey is a very determined individual who will succeed at whatever she puts her mind to, whether it be career, school or sport, she will always be a winner," remarked Cambrian badminton coach Rob McCann.
