WINDSOR, Ont. - Humber College's Liam Sutherland (Mississauga) is the 2017 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Baseball Player of the Year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Windsor, Ont., on Thursday evening.
The second-year outfielder was second among OCAA players with 22 runs scored and fourth with 23 hits. Sutherland batted .359 with 10 RBI and six stolen bases. He also had an .475 on base percentage. Sutherland is also an OCAA All-Star.
Sutherland's teammate, Max Elofson (Minnesota), is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The first-baseman had a .225 batting average, with seven runs and five RBI.
The 2017 OCAA Batting Champion is Carlos Arteaga (London) of Fanshawe. The fourth-year shortstop batted .436 with 24 hits in 55 plate appearances. He also had a .542 on base percentage and .600 slugging percentage for good measure. Arteaga is also an OCAA All-Star.
Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville) of Durham is the OCAA Pitcher of the Year. The fourth-year player threw an OCAA-high 34 strike outs in 34 innings of work, compiling a 4-1 record. His 1.85 ERA was third-best among OCAA hurlers.
Humber's Denny Berni is the OCAA Coach of the Year. Berni led Humber to its best-ever OCAA regular season record at 15-5, good for second place in the OCAA. Humber also defeated regular season champion and four-time defending OCAA gold medalist St. Clair in three of four meetings.
Also named OCAA All-Stars were Durham's Logan Stewart (Lindsay); George Brown's Anthony Buonaiuto (Toronto); Humber's Stephen Andreopoulos (Toronto), Dennis Dei Baning (Toronto), Steven Hough (Toronto), Justin Marra (Toronto) and Keegan Murphy (Brampton); and St. Clair's Kevin Dion (Newmarket) and Taylor Pappin (Brantford).
