TECUMSEH, Ont. - Humber College (Etobicoke) opened the OCAA Men's Baseball Championship with a convincing 6-1 win over Durham College (Oshawa) Friday at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh, Ont.
The Hawks jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning and added a single run in the third inning to take control early. Durham scored in the fifth to keep within striking distance but Humber answered quickly in their bottom half with three runs to put the game away.
Steven Hough (Toronto) went the distance the mound for Humber earning the win over seven innings. Hough was named Humber's Player of the Game and allowed just one run on five hits while striking out six Durham batters. Designated hitter Dennis Dei Baning (Toronto) had a pair of hits including a two-run RBI double which was the big strike for Humber in the game's opening inning.
Third basemen Ryan Bothwell (Napanee) had a single and earned Player of the Game recognition for Durham.
Humber advances to the 6:30 p.m. Game Friday night against the St. Clair/Fanshawe winner. Durham will face the loser of that game at 4 p.m.
