BOASIAKO HEADLINES OCAA MEN'S SOCCER AWARDS

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Humber College's Kingsley Boasiako (Brampton) is the 2017 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Year. He received the award in a ceremony held in Peterborough, Ont., on Wednesday evening.

The fifth-year defender was instrumental in Humber's undefeated regular season in which the club allowed the fewest goals against, only four in 10 matches. Also named the Central Division Defensive Player of the Year, Boasiako played in nine of these contests. Boasiako is also an OCAA All-Star and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian.

Durham's Bruce Cullen (Pickering) is also a CCAA All-Canadian. The fifth-year midfielder scored five times in eight matches on a club that also was stingy defensively, allowing seven goals against. Cullen is also an OCAA All-Star.

Algonquin's Mike Gagliano is the OCAA's nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. The East Division Coach of the Year, Gagliano led Algonquin to the East Division championship, going undefeated in its last eight matches. Other candidates for the award were Central Division Coach of the Year Michael Aquino of Humber, and West Division Coach of the Year Gad Espinosa of Redeemer.

The Overall Rookie of the Year is also the League Scoring Champion. George Brown's Filipe Vilela (Toronto) scored 10 goals in eight matches, leading all players with a 2.50 goals per game average. Vilela, the Central Division Rookie of the Year, is also an OCAA All-Star. Other candidates for the award were East Division Rookie of the Year Malek Belhaj (Libya) of Algonquin and West Division Rookie of the Year Mike Sneddon (Mount Brydges) of Fanshawe.

In addition to Boasiako, other top defenders include East Division Defensive Player of the Year Cody Kraemer (Whitby) of Durham and West Division Defensive Player of the Year Andrew Currie (Woodstock) of Niagara. Also honoured were East Division Scoring Champion Belhaj of Algonquin and West Division Scoring Champion Korede Adepitan (Etobicoke) of St. Clair.

Algonquin, Humber and Fanshawe were recognized as East, Central and West Division Champions, respectively. Durham was the best defensive team in the East, as was Humber and Fanshawe in the Central and West, respectively.

Several OCAA All-Stars were also recognized. Joining Cullen as East Division All-Stars are Stephane Ahanda (Cameroon) of Durham; Osama Alsharif (Saudi Arabia) of Algonquin; Sam Barratt (Peterborough) of Fleming; Belhaj of Algonquin; Joshau Collins (Whitby) of Seneca; Justin Gibson (Ottawa) of Algonquin; Cody Kraemer (Whitby) of Durham; Federico Leal (Columbia) of Algonquin; Taejon Mikle-Ryan (Brampton) of Centennial; and Ashton Vaz (Ajax) of Centennial.

Joining Boasiako and Vilela as OCAA All-Stars from the Central Division are Shaquille Agard (Toronto) of George Brown; Luca Baldassarre (Woodbridge) of Humber; Daniele Clemente (Toronto) of Humber; Nick Frenati (Brampton) of Humber; Jaineil Hoilett (Brampton) of Humber; Ozzy Keles (Turkey) of George Brown; Marc Medeiros (Mississauga) of Humber; Julian Mullin (Brampton) of Humber; Jesse Oliver (Trinidad and Tobago) of George Brown; Joshua Portillo (Mississauga) of Humber; and Gianlucas Scorzafave (Bolton) of Humber.

The OCAA West Division All-Stars include Korede Adepitan (Etobicoke) of St. Clair; Ahmad Al Rajie (London) of Fanshawe; Tomas Alvarez (London) of Fanshawe; Jordi Amores (St. Catharines) of Niagara; Cameron Anger (Windsor) of St. Clair; Andrew Currie (Woodstock) of Niagara; Justin Dargue (Hamilton) of Mohawk; Daniel Grootenboer (Chatham) of Redeemer; Martin Nyul (Hungary) of St. Clair; Jeremy Petrusma (Smithville) of Redeemer; Sam Robson (Burlington) of Niagara; and Carlos Williams (St. Catharines) of Niagara.
