DAY 1 COMPLETE AT OCAA MEN'S VOLLEYBALL PROVINCIALS

HAMILTON, Ont. - The host Mohawk Mountaineers have earned a berth in the semifinals of the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect in Hamilton, Ont.

Quarter-Final #4 - Mohawk 3, Sheridan 0

The Mountaineers swept the Sheridan Bruins 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre on Thursday (Feb 23).

Nathan Delguidice led the attack with 21 kills for Mohawk. Eric Girard had 13 kills and three aces. Trevor McLaughlin contributed 11 kills, one ace and one block. Chris Spack had 49 assists.

For Sheridan, Parvir Jhajj had 10 kills, while Christian Dela Cruz added seven. Justin Kong contributed 27 assists.

Players of the Game were Shaun Lasala of Sheridan and Delguidice for Mohawk.

Friday, on the consolation side, George Brown will meet Redeemer at 1 p.m. Humber plays Sheridan at 3 p.m.

In the championship semis, Fanshawe will meet Durham at 6 p.m. Then at 8 p.m., Mohawk will face Georgian.

Quarter-Final #3 - Georgian 3, Humber 1

The Georgian Grizzlies rallied for a 3-1 win over the Humber Hawks in their opening match at the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect at Mohawk College Thursday (Feb. 23).

The team from Barrie, Ont., with a record of 18-0 in the regular season, dropped the first set of the quarter-final, but bounced back smartly for a 21-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23 triumph over the Hawks.

Darien Haynes had 11 kills and four stuff blocks for the Grizzlies. Adam Bielby produced 10 kills and three kills. Liam Gray had 40 assists and 16 digs for Georgian.

Matt Kerr was named Player of the Game for the Grizzlies. 

Alex Gibbs, who was the Player of the Game for Humber, had 17 kills, one ace and one block. Clayton Blanchette had 15 kills, two aces and one block. Adam Kinoshito had 38 assists.

With the victory, Georgian will be back on the court at 8 p.m. Friday for a semi-final contest against the winner of the Mohawk-Sheridan match - the last one on Day 1 of the event. 

Humber will be playing in the consolation semi-final at 3 p.m. Friday against the Mohawk-Sheridan loser.

Quarter-Final #2 - Durham 3, Redeemer 2

The Durham Lords looked like their 16-2 regular season record was a bit deceiving when they dropped the first two sets to the 12-6 Redeemer Royals, but the Lords stormed back and won a thrilling five-setter at the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect.

Durham scored a 21-25, 19-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-12 win over Redeemer at Mohawk College Thursday (Feb. 23).

Andrew Dube had 16 kills and two service aces, to pace the Lords. Andrew Watson had 15 kills, and three stuff blocks. Erik Janssen collected 10 kills and John Pham put up 48 assists.

Linden Bontkes had 13 kills and two blocks for the Royals. Mitchell Harris tallied 10 kills and three aces. Pearson Stiller had 27 assists.

Harris was named Redeemer's player of the game, while Harrison Wood took the honour for Durham.

The Lords will face Fanshawe in the semi-finals Friday at 6 p.m. at Mohawk's David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre in Hamilton, Ont.

The Fanshawe Falcons showed their power to open play in the OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect in Hamilton, Ont., on Thursday (Feb. 23).

The Falcons, who were 17-1 in the regular season, swept the George Brown Huskies 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre at Mohawk College.

Fanshawe spread the scoring out. Their player of the game, Nate Van Camp had 10 kills. Andre Foreman collected six kills, two service aces and one stuff block. James Jackson had six kills, two aces and two blocks and David AuCoin had six points, one ace and one block. Sebastian Lethbridge produced 23 assists.

For George Brown, Ahmed Youssef contributed four kills and two blocks. Mateusz Krok had four kills and one block.

The Huskies player of the game, Pardeep Bhogal had 16 assists.

With the victory, Fanshawe advances to the semi-finals Friday at 6 p.m.
