ST. CLAIR ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME

BRAMPTON, Ont – The bronze medal game of the 2017 OCAA Softball Championship at the Brampton Fairgrounds featured the top-seeded St. Clair Saints taking on the fourth-seeded Mohawk Mountaineers.

Mohawk would start pitcher Aimee Leduc for her third consecutive game of the weekend, while St. Clair would counter with Sara Stiller who won her previous game against the Mountaineers on day one.

It was a perfect start for the Mountaineers, as shortstop Sarah Bell launched the first pitch of the game for a home run off Stiller. St. Clair would answer with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game after two.

Both teams would trade runs in the third, with Mohawk scoring two in the top half, but would fall behind after St. Clair scored four in the bottom of the inning.

The Saints would put together another four-run inning in the fifth to take a five-run lead.

The Mountaineers would rally in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Unfortunately for Mohawk, St. Clair’s Jordan Taylor would make a terrific play at short snaring a line drive and doubling up the runner at third.

Mohawk was unable to muster any more offence after that as the Saints claimed the victory by a score of 9-4 to earn a spot in the gold medal game against Durham.

Despite the loss, Mohawk will go home with a bronze medal, the programs first OCAA Softball medal in six years.

First pitch of the 2017 OCAA Women’s Softball gold medal game between the Durham Lords and St. Clair Saints is scheduled for 1:00 pm
