MOHAWK TOPS SENECA TO ADVANCE TO THE OCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Seneca Sting were unable to fight their way back after the Mohawk Mountaineers came out firing in the second Semi-Final game at the OCAA Championships.  The Mountaineers win 81-65 and advance to the Finals to face off against #1 ranked Humber Hawks tomorrow at 5pm. 

The Mountaineers took a commanding lead over the Sting 22-6 by the end of the first quarter.  The Sting were bombarded by points as eight different Mountaineers got on the board in the first.  4th year Carissa Browne took advantage of the Sting's foul trouble, scoring 5 points for the Mountaineers.  1st year Jasmina Kucic contributed 4 points of her own to the Mountaineers total.  2nd year Sharifa Clarke of the Sting led with 4 points.  While 4th year Sarah Givens put up 2.

The Mountaineers continued their high scoring into the second quarter with 2nd year Hunter Johns scoring 5 points.  3rd year, Mountaineers Player of the Game, Shanien O'Neill hit a big three-pointer and 2 free throws.  The Sting found some more offense in the second quarter, led by 1st team All-Star and Sting Player of the Game Alcian Satchel with 6 points.  The Mountaineers went into half time leading 41-17.

The Sting came out of halftime with a new energy putting pressure on the Mountaineers.  Satchel went on a run and put up 10 points for the Sting.  Shenice Stubbs was a presence under the net and able to put the Mountaineers into foul trouble, she contributed 6 points to the Stings total.  Cally Strongman of Mohawk had 6 of the teams 18 points in the third quarter.  The Sting cut into the Mountaineers lead after the third trailing 59-40.

Taylor Heron came out flying in the fourth quarter for the Sting scoring all 10 of her points.  Satchel also put up 5 of her own, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mountaineers first quarter run. O'Neill ensured the victory for Mohawk with 9 points in the fourth quarter to pull the game out of reach for the Sting with the final score: Mohawk 81, Seneca 65.

Alcian Satchel led in scoring for the sting with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.  While 1st year Shenice Stubbs dominated the boards putting up 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals.  1st year Taylor Heron contributed 10 points, and 3 rebounds.  While Taylor Allicock contributed with her defensive play adding 9 points and 6 steals.

Shanien O'Neill led the Mountaineers offensively scoring 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Monika Batinic went 100% on three-pointers hitting 4 for 4 with 2 steals.  While Carissa Browne contributed 13 points and 6 steals to the Mountaineer's victory.
