REGYNA ARMONAS

Category: Athlete
Sport: Women's Volleyball, Men's Volleyball & Badminton
Institution: Loyalist College
Inducted: 2003

Regyna Armonas is one of the more unique athletes in OCAA history. Before coming to Loyalist College in 1981, Armonas played competitive volleyball and competed on the Canadian women's volleyball team at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

Loyalist did not have a women's volleyball program when Armonas arrived at college, so she tried out for and made the men's team, becoming the only woman to play OCAA men's volleyball. The following year, Loyalist started a woman's program and Armonas was a natural to join the team. They went on to qualify for the provincial championship.

As a further testament to her athletic abilities, Armonas competed in OCAA mixed doubles badminton, and she and her partner qualified for the provincials. Loyalist presented her with the Ed Logan Trophy for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, and in 1992 she was recognized as the college's Female Athlete of the Quarter Century.
