James Cheung was a member of the George Brown badminton program for four seasons, winning three OCAA gold medals with three different partners.

Beginning in 1987-88, James won a men's doubles championship with Vincent Chan, defeating a Lambton team in the gold medal match after losing to them in the round robin.

Returning to the program in 1989-90, James teammed up with Cassie Chang to win the mixed doubles crown. Similar to his experience in 1987-88, James and Cassie defeated a Seneca team that they lost to in the round robin. The duo went on to win a CCAA bronze medal at nationals and James was named George Brown athlete of the year.

In 1990-91, James returned to men's doubles where he won his third individual gold medal along with partner Saad Khan. James won a fourth OCAA medal in 1991-92, partnering with Sean Shientag to earn silver. James graduated from the George Brown graphic design program.
