Alex Hoffman was one of the founders of the OCAA and served as St.Clair's Athletic Director for 28 years (1967-1995). Hoffman also served on the OCAA Executive as president from 1969-71.

In 1977, Hoffman received an OCAA Award of Excellence for his contributions to intercollegiate sports. During that time, Hoffman also served as head coach of the St. Clair men's basketball team from 1967-1980, where he collected a record of 128 wins and 42 losses and in 1979, was honoured as OCAA Coach of the Year.

Hoffman was also responsible for initiating many new programs for St. Clair Athletics and the OCAA. In 1984, he researched, established and funded the first athletic scholarship program in the OCAA. Other programs included St. Clair's recreation leadership program, St. Clair's physical education and outdoor education programs, and other various St. Clair athletic fundraisers and corporate sponsorship programs.

For his contribution to sport within his community, Hoffman received various awards throughout his career and was highly respected by the staff, students, and athletes who were associated with him. In 1979, the St.Clair College Student Council acknowledged Hoffman as Person of the Year.
