Ryan Hughes began his collegiate athletic career at Durham College in 1988. This outstanding golfer wasted no time establishing himself by capturing the individual gold medal and leading his team to the school's first-ever OCAA golf championship in his first season.

Hughes would repeat the accomplishment again the following year as Durham won their second consecutive title. The Business Administration graduate won his record-tying third consecutive OCAA individual gold medal in 1990, and then accomplished what no other collegiate golfer has ever done, when he won his unprecedented and OCAA-record fourth consecutive OCAA gold medal in 1991.

Upon graduation, the golden touch continued for Hughes as he coached the Durham golf program to another two OCAA golf championships in 1992 and 1995. All in total - eight OCAA gold medals both as a player and as a coach.

He was inducted into the Durham College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2011, he became a member of the OCAA Golf All-Millennium team.
