OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team can breathe a little easier after Tuesday night's 5-2 victory over the Fleming Knights at Vaso's Field.
With the Lords notching a season-high goals in their lopsided victory over the Knights, everything went Durham's way in their third last game of the regular season.
Heading into the match just two points up on Fleming, it was nearly a must-win for the Lords, who now need either a Knights loss or single point in their final two matches to lock up a trip to the postseason.
Knowing what was on the line, the Lords came out firing early as
Irene Halis (Maple, Ont.) buried her free-kick opportunity in the first minute of play.
Their offensive pressure continued as
Taylor MacIver (Barrie, Ont.) and
Sarah Balzia (Brooklin, Ont.) each scored in the 10
th and 12
th minutes respectively to put Durham ahead 3-0.
Fleming did strike back with a goal a minute later by Zoe Harrington, but before the half
Taylor Ford (Brooklin, Ont.) reinstated the three-goal lead for the Lords.
Madison Smith (Bowmanville, Ont.) added the Lords final goal of the game in the 72
nd minute before Larissa Rygailo scored for Fleming in the 78
th as Durham walked away with their largest win of the 2016 regular season.
In goal
Heather Travis (Oakville, Ont.) made seven saves for the Lords, while Shannon Leitz made two saves before leaving the game for the Knights. Rebekah Watson made seven saves after entering in the 15
th minute.
This Friday night, Durham will play their last home game against the Algonquin Thunder. Kick-off at Vaso's Field is 6 p.m. Their final game of the regular season is Wednesday in Belleville against the Loyalist Lancers.
