OTTAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's soccer program did something they have not done in 17 seasons – beat the Algonquin Thunder.
 
The OCAA has been dominated by the Thunder since the turn of the millennium having won 13 OCAA medals including nine championships and three national titles. In that time, they compiled an 18-game unbeaten streak against the Lords.

Durham did what many thought was impossible on Saturday afternoon as they shutout Algonquin 2-0 in their first OCAA conference game of the season.
 
Prior to the game, Durham wore t-shirts in memory of Algonquin's Alex Asmis, who tragically passed away last spring.
 
"I was proud of our team today," said head coach Dave Ashfield. "I asked them to show respect before the game when Algonquin honoured Alex and then to battle like they did for the win. It was more than we as a coaching staff could have asked for."
 
Durham's last victory over the Thunder came back on Oct. 14, 2000 when the Lords shutout Algonquin 1-0.
 
Bruce Cullen (Pickering, Ont.) and Kevin Thibodeau (Pickering, Ont.) scored first half goals for the Lords while Dylan Yeo (Newmarket, Ont.) earned the clean sheet as the Thunder fired 27 shots his way.
 
"Beating a team of that caliber shows how the hard work in training camp and practice has paid off," said Ashfield. "It's nice to get that monkey off our back but it is a long season and we know things are not going to get any easier."
 
Nicholas Axhorn (Pickering, Ont.) stood out on the backline, shutting down the Thunder's offensive attack that was second in scoring in the OCAA one year ago.
 
Durham's next action comes on Friday night when they host the Fleming Knights at Vaso's Field. Kick off for the Lords' home opener is 8:15 p.m.
