Durham claws out a five-set win over George Brown

OSHAWA, Ont. – It felt like the playoffs in the CRWC on Tuesday night as the Durham Lords and George Brown Huskies went the distance in OCAA men's volleyball action with the home side pulling out a 3-2 victory.

2017 athlete of the year Harrison Wood (Uxbridge, Ont.) put an exclamation point on the victory hammering home a kill for the Lords in a 15-11 fifth set win.

Durham had to fight back twice in the match losing the first and third sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-21. The Lords would end up winning set two and four by scores of 25-20 and 25-22 to force the fifth and deciding set.

Durham would take a big lead winning six of seven points to open the fifth set but George Brown would show some fight back of their own and responded to get within two points. Down the stretch, Spencer Edwards (Vineland, Ont.) would come up with a huge block to set up Wood for the final point of the match.

Durham's victory put an end to the Adidas Cup champion Huskies six-game win streak as they fall to 6-2 on the year. The Lords are a half game back of the Huskies for second place with a 5-2 record as they have now won five straight matches.

OCAA athlete of the week Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) moved into second all-time in Durham College kills as he racked up a game-high 18 against the Huskies. With 508 in his career, he passes Dave McMann (493) and is now 37 behind Steve Clarey (545) for top spot. With 25 points and 623 in his career, he is third all-time in total points as he passed James Mayer (600) and Adam Schiedel (604) on Tuesday.

Lucas Pichl (Cobourg, Ont.) had a big night at the net as he had a career high eight blocks to go along with seven kills and three aces while Wood had 10 kills and five blocks.

Rory Langley (Uxbridge, Ont.) had all 29 assists for Durham while Luke Fafard (Daiphin, Man.) and Tyler Krabi (Stouffville, Ont.) had 13 and nine digs respectively.

Ahmed Youssef led the Huskies offence with 12 kills and teammate Ray Tantengco had 10.

Durham's next match will be at home on Thursday night when they host the Centennial Colts. First serve is 8 p.m. Centennial got off to a great start to the year with three straight wins but have struggled as of late dropping three of their last four matches.

As part of the annual holiday food drive on campus, at each Durham College home game, the student-athletes are asking for spectators to bring along a non-perishable food item or items to help support those less fortunate. Those who bring in a donation will receive a free bag of popcorn.

The holiday food drive provides hampers of food to families of students in need, helping make the holidays a little happier.
