Three first half goals lift Lords to victory over Colts

SCARBOROUGH, Ont. - Three first half goals sealed a 3-0 win for the Durham College women's soccer team on the road against the Centennial Colts on Tuesday night.

In the opening minute of play, Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.) scored her seventh goal of the season to give the Lords an early lead. The OCAA star of the week is now tied for third in OCAA scoring.

The Lords dominated the opening part of the game and had a few chances to draw further away from the Colts. Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.) hit the crossbar from close range in the 20th minute and Bailey Colangelo (Whitby, Ont.) saw her header go just over the bar shortly after.

Durham got a second goal in the 35th minute when Vanessa Juras (Ajax, Ont.) put the ball into the top corner from about 30 yards out off a free kick.

Just before the break, Durham got a third after a goal-mouth scramble ended with Colangelo tapping home from close range off a corner kick to give the Lords a comfortable lead at halftime.

"The real plus today was we took advantage of the 3-0 lead and played a very smart conservative second half, which allowed us to rest some players that were struggling with nagging injuries," said head coach Alex Bianchi.

Goalkeeper Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.) came off at the break and was replaced by Milinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.).

The Colts started to come into the game more but were still struggling to create many chances. Roblero made four saves in the second half to keep the clean sheet.

"I can't say enough about Milinda Roblero, a striker that we have asked to play midfield, full back and tonight played the second half in net," said Bianchi. "We really needed to give Jenna King a break. With our other two keepers still not cleared to played with injuries they incurred before coming into camp, we had to find some help and that was Milinda. She really did a fine job and how many players can say that they have scored goals and kept a clean sheet at the college level in the same season?"

Durham's 3-0 victory moves them to 13 points on the season placing them just two back of the first-place Seneca Sting and one back of the Algonquin Thunder. They now prepare for the Fleming Knights on Thurs. Sept. 27 in Peterborough.

  Overall Record: 5-5-1 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 4-2-1

Next match: Thursday, Sept. 27 @ Fleming Knights (6 p.m. – Peterborough, Ont.)
