OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's basketball team led early, but down the stretch the Seneca Sting capitalized to close the gap and eventually defeat the Lords 73-63 on Tuesday night.
 
In a game that could have put Durham six points up on Seneca and Algonquin in the OCAA east region standings, the Lords handed away 20 points from the free throw line in their 10-point loss. Durham was 21-for-41 for 51.2% on the night.
 
After one quarter the Lords and Sting were tied 8-8, but Durham held the two-point edge – 27-25 – at halftime.
 
Adjustments at the break and a press by Seneca translated into the Sting outscoring the Lords 29-13 to take the lead for the remainder of the game and hold a 54-40 advantage on Durham heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
With 2:35 to go the Lords got to within seven points, down 65-58, but that was the closest they would get as the Sting shut the door the rest of the way.
 
Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) finished the night with a team-high 23 points for the Lords.
 
The standout performance, not to be overshadowed by the loss, came off the bench for Durham as Kaydian Owusu (Scarborough, Ont.) played a career-high 17 minutes and had a career-high 12 boards. Her previous high was nine on October 24, 2015 against the George Brown Huskies.
 
Offensively for Seneca it was Alcian Satchel leading with 25 points. The only other scorers besides Satchel and Panchan in double-digits were Taylor Allicock for Seneca with 13 and Courtney Harley (Cambridge, Ont.) with 11 for Durham.
 
The Lords now have the remainder of the week off as they prepare for the Algonquin Thunder, who visit the CRWC on February 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
