Lords fall to Thunder to split opening weekend

OTTAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's soccer team split their opening weekend of the OCAA season as the Algonquin Thunder defeated the Lords 2-1 on Sunday in the nation's capital.

Algonquin scored both goals in the opening half, putting themselves ahead 2-0 at the break.

Durham turned the momentum in their favour in the second half as Conor Lowe (Whitby, Ont.) scored his first OCAA goal in the 49th minute to cut the Thunder lead in half.

The Lords pressed hard for the remainder of the match, with numerous opportunities, including what the team thought might be a goal on an offside call, but were unable to draw Algonquin who moved into first place in the east region standings at 2-0-0.

Mark Kamstra (Newcastle, Ont.) took the loss in goal for Durham.

This Wednesday night the team is back in action for their annual friendly against the cross-campus rival UOIT Ridgebacks. The Campus Cup game has been rescheduled to this week after it was cancelled due to lightning last week. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The next league action for the Lords is Saturday in Peterborough against the Fleming Knights.
