KITCHENER, Ont. – The Durham College women's softball team earned two hard-fought victories on Tuesday night as they beat Conestoga 6-3 and 6-2 on the road.
Even though the Lords beat Conestoga by three and four runs respectively, both games were a battle from start to finish with Durham eventually pulling away at the end.
With the pair of victories, the Lords improve to 9-3 and sit in second place in the standings, two points behind St. Clair but have two games in hand. Conestoga falls to fourth place with a 6-8 record.
In game one, putting multi-run innings together was the difference as the Lords scored two runs in the third, fifth and seventh while Conestoga scored just single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh.
Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) threw 102 pitches in the complete game victory, allowing two earned runs off of five hits and four walks. Hill has gone the distance in every start this year picking up three victories.
Lead-off hitter
Sabrina Stalteri (Vaughan, Ont.) had her best performance of the year as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) also had a multi-hit night going 2-for-4 while
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.) went 1-for-1 with a run and RBI, coming into the game as a pinch-hitter and hitting a triple.
Leading game two 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Conestoga managed to break up starting pitcher Glendinning's shutout bid as they scored a pair to tie it up. In the top half of the seventh, the Lords got clutch two-out hits by
Sarah Seifried (Drayton, Ont.), Hill and Glendinning to cash in four runs to take a 6-2 lead. The Lords would shut down Conestoga's offence in the bottom half of the inning to pick up the sweep.
Marina Christie (Pickering, Ont.) had an impressive performance at the plate going 3-for-4. Hill was 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI while Stalteri was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Up next for Durham is a doubleheader in North York against the Seneca Sting on Thursday night.
