OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's volleyball team may have lost a single set, but had a strong performance in their home opener – winning 3-1 over the Algonquin Thunder.
Durham opened with a 25-9 first set, followed by the Thunder having a better outing in the second – the Lords still won 25-16.
Unfortunately for the players and fans hoping for a sweep, the Lords fell 25-22 in the third to force an extra set.
With teams trading points for much of the set, the Lords leaned on their experienced lineup to walk away on the positive side of a 25-23 set – taking the match 3-1.
The Lords offence was spread out as
Erik Janssen (Hampton, Ont.) had the team-high in kills with nine.
Bret Polfuss (Kitchener, Ont.) and
Damin Noss (Woodville, Ont.) added eight and seven kills respectively.
Michael Harper (Oakville, Ont.) was huge at the net on defence, earning a game-high three blocks for Durham.
Andrew Neubauer and Jonah Nieman's seven kills led Algonquin's offence. Nieman also had three blocks.
Durham is next in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host the La Cité Coyotes.
