Wowk has himself a night against Seneca

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College baseball team is heading into postseason play on a winning note after sweeping the Seneca Sting in doubleheader action at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.

Durham won by scores of 9-1 and 15-5 (six innings) to finish conference play with a 13-7 record, good enough for third place in the OCAA conference standings. The Lords will now travel to Windsor to take part in the OCAA Championship hosted by the St. Clair Saints. The championship will run from Oct. 20-21 at Lacasse Park in Tecumseh, Ont. St. Clair, Humber and Fanshawe also qualified for the event.

Brian Wowk (Oshawa, Ont.) had a standout night combining to go 7-for-9 with six runs scored, three RBI and four stolen bases. The Lords freshman now has 12 steals, moving him into second in the OCAA.

Alec Brown (Bowmanville, Ont.) had a good bounce back effort in game one on the hill for Durham as he pitched five strong innings allowing one earned run off of four hits while striking out six. Jake Storry (Port Perry, Ont.) closed out the game pitching two shutout innings.

In game two, Mitchel Heineman (Pickering, Ont.) earned the victory coming into the game in relief. He pitched four shutout innings and allowed just four hits.

Wowk, Connor May (Oshawa, Ont.), Spencer Edwards (Vineland, Ont.) and Aidan Ali (Whitby, Ont.) all had multi-hit performances in game two. Ali and Edwards would end up driving in three runs apiece. In the opening game, May and Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) each had two hits apiece.

Durham will look to end a two-year medal drought this weekend after missing out on the podium for back-to-back seasons at the OCAA championship. Prior to that, Durham won back-to-back silver medals.

Following provincials, Durham will play host to the second annual Canadian Colleges Baseball National Championship. The tournament will run from Oct. 26-28 at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium and Ritson Field.
