OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's basketball team made a statement to open their regular season, defeating the highly touted Algonquin Thunder 75-59 on Friday night.
Last season Durham won 66-64 over the Thunder in November to earn their first victory against Algonquin in 18 games. Given Algonquin's domination of OCAA women's basketball in recent years, this makes the season opening victory mean that much more to the Lords.
Friday night the Lords were down 14-10 after the opening quarter, but their offence took over beginning in the second quarter as
Brittany Walters (Oshawa, Ont.) scored 10 of her 17 points in the quarter to lead Durham to a 31-25 lead at halftime.
In the second half
Lindsay Panchan (Ajax, Ont.) got in her usual rhythm, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the third and fourth quarters.
Also finishing in double-digit scoring for Durham was
Kayla Marshall (Ottawa, Ont.) with 10 points.
Jessica Basquin led the Thunder with 19 points, but Katie Flansbury had the only double-double of the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Tuesday night the Lords will be back in action on the road when they face the Seneca Sting in Toronto. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
