OSHAWA, Ont. – With goals from six different players, the Durham College women's soccer team easily earned their first victory of the season 8-0 over the Loyalist Lancers.
Of the six players,
MacKenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.) was the only Lord that didn't score her first Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) goal in the match.
"We have a lot of new players joining us this year and we're continuing to come together as a group," said Durham College head coach
Alex Bianchi. "We're pleased with the result today, but it is still early and we still have to continue to improve if we want to be successful in late October."
Early in the match on a free kick,
Lauren Coyle (Quispamsis, N.B.) executed the perfect set piece as she put the ball to the back post past Loyalist keeper Mariah Beskers for
Milinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.) to head in. The goal came in the fifth minute.
The Lords cooled off and Beskers kept her team in the match until the flood gates started to open in the 22
nd minute when
Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.) scored off a scramble in front.
Goals by Coyle,
Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.), Barry and
Jennifer Smith (Toronto, Ont.) rounded out the first half as the Lords led 6-0 and were outshooting Loyalist 12-1.
Coyle and Lapointe each scored again in the second half to round out Durham's scoring.
In goal for the Lords,
Jayden Ball (Oshawa, Ont.) earned her first clean sheet in OCAA play after turning aside four Lancer shots on goal.
The victory now has Durham 1-1-0 on the season as they head into Friday night's match at home against the Fleming Knights. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
