Lords end Seneca's win streak

NORTH YORK, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team put an end to Seneca's six-game win streak on Wednesday night as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw.

"I was proud of the team's effort tonight," said head coach Alex Bianchi. "We're making gains and moving forward. Seneca is a good team that is well coached and have had a strong program for years. We have to build on results like tonight and understand that the process is never ending."

Durham held a 2-1 lead early in the second half, but Seneca's Georgia Thompson took a cross, fought off a defender and beat Jayden Ball (Oshawa, Ont.) in the bottom right corner. The teams would trade chances, mostly from distance, for the remainder of the game but either side could break the tie.

The Lords established the first half lead with back-to-back goals three minutes apart. Trailing 1-0, Malinda Roblero (Pickering, Ont.) capitalized off a blocked shot, as she one-timed a rebound in bottom left corner to level the score.

Shortly after, the rain started to pour down and the Lords caught a break. Durham sent in a long free kick that the Sting goalkeeper could not hold on to. Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.) was in the right place at the right time as she scored off the rebound, her team leading fifth goal of the season.

Durham (3-3-2) moves one point in front of St. Lawrence (3-4-1) for third place in the OCAA east region. Seneca (6-1-1) is in second place, eight points up on Durham.

The Lords will be back in action on Friday night in Scarborough when they take on the Centennial Colts. Centennial has struggled in 2017 posting an 0-5-2 record.
