LIAM GRAY BREAKS CAREER ACE RECORD AS GEORGIAN WINS 11TH GAME
Liam Gray now has the most career aces in OCAA history with 172 as he helped lead the Grizzlies to their 11th win this season.
The Georgian Grizzlies men's volleyball team continued their busy regular season schedule on Wednesday night when they took on the Canadore Panthers in North Bay, ON.
It was a big night for men's volleyball player Liam Gray.
The former two-time CCAA All Canadian entered the game needing just one ace to set the record for all-time career OCAA aces.
In the second set, the Barrie native got his ace to set the new record. He then went on to hit a total of five in the game and holds the new OCAA record with 172 aces.
The Grizzlies went on to win the match against the Panthers 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20). Georgian improved their record to 11-1 on the season and they continue to sit in first place in the OCAA east division standings.
The spotlight on Gray isn't going away as he has now broken two OCAA records this season, most aces in a single game (15) and career aces (172), but he also has a third record within reach.
Gray now has 57 aces this season alone and is only eight away from setting a new mark for single season aces.
Teammate Darien Haynes is also fast approaching some records of his own.
Earlier this season, Haynes became Georgian's all-time leading scorer and is now only 17 points away from joining the 1,000 point club. The Barrie native is also only eight blocks away from setting a new OCAA record for most career blocks with the current mark being 251.
Georgian will continue their stretch of road games first taking on the Seneca Sting this Saturday, Jan. 19 followed by a trip to face the Durham Lords on Jan. 24.
The Grizzlies will play their next home game on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host the Algonquin Thunder at the Georgian Athletic Centre. The women's game gets underway at 6 p.m. followed by the men's at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for the double-header at the doors for just $5.
