Lords roll over La Cité in convincing fashion

Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's basketball team improved to 14-5 in conference play as they defeated the La Cité Coyotes 108-87 Sunday afternoon at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

Durham has won seven straight games and has clinched a home playoff game that will take place on Sunday, Feb. 25. The Lords will either finish third or fourth, depending on the result in their regular season finale against the Centennial Colts on Tuesday night in Scarborough.

The Lords began Sunday's game with a seemingly unstoppable offence, leading by as much as 21-6 halfway through the opening quarter. La Cité battled back in the later minutes of the first quarter to cut Durham's lead to six as the Lords finished the quarter with a 28-22 lead.

After dropping 93 points on Fleming in their first victory of the season on Saturday night, that Coyotes offence picked up again as they outscored the hosts in the second quarter 26-24.

Heading into the halftime break, Durham led 52-48 headlined by Brandon Halliburton (Brampton, Ont.) who recorded 14 points in the opening twenty minutes and 12 points, seven rebounds from Funsho Dimeji (Malton, Ont.).

Durham benefited from 13 points off turnovers and 10 free through points in the first half.

The third quarter would be Durham's highest scoring as they dropped 31 points to lead 83-66 through half an hour of play.

La Cité held the Lords to only a single point in the final few of minutes of the game but it wasn't enough to hold off Durham as the Lords went on to win 108-87. Durham have won four consecutive games over the Coyotes dating back to Nov. 27, 2016.

Halliburton finished the game with 27 points, four steals, a rebound and an assist in 33:39 of play time. Coming into the weekend, he was fourth in league scoring averaging 22.09 points per game.

Dimeji hauled in eight rebounds on top of 18 points, a block and an assist in the game as he joined the 300-point club this season.

Junior Masudi of the Coyotes led the way with 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Shooting 20-for-33 in the second half, the Lords shooting percentage improved to 56.7% in the game, as well as 57.9% from beyond the arc and 80.8% from the free throw line. This was a key factor in the game as the Coyotes only shot for 42.0%, despite taking 14 more shots.
