Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – Durham College's women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 OCAA regular season with a 82-75 win over the visiting Centennial Colts on Tuesday.
The Lords extend their regular winning streak over Centennial to four games with their last loss coming in November 2015.
Third-year guard
Maddie Dender (Ajax, Ont.) opened the scoring this season for the Lords in their home opener with a lay-up 1:52 into the game.
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.) made an impact immediately in her college basketball debut – registering five points including a long three-point shot made in the first quarter. However, Durham would trail 22-13 after 10 minutes.
After only scoring 13 in the first quarter, the Lords more than doubled that in the second with 28 points in the quarter. Going into halftime with a 43-36 lead, Durham shot 44.1 per cent from the field including
Dekota Kirby (Markham, Ont.) already reaching double-digit scoring with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Durham's third quarter offensive performance couldn't reach the bar set in the second as they only put up 16 points, but they held Centennial to 19 – which was nearly on par with their quarterly average to that point. This was enough to give the Lords a 57-55 lead heading into the fourth.
The Lords picked things up again in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Colts 25-20 in the final frame to win the game 82-75.
Dender led the team with 20 points, while Kirby, and
Victoria Brody (Scarborough, Ont.) scored 15 and 12 points respectively.
Glendinning,
Alyssa Navarro (Oshawa, Ont.) and
Zharia Gallimore (Ottawa, Ont.) each saw court time in their college basketball debuts. Glendinning was the standout with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals. Navarro recorded six points and Gallimore's lone bucket of the game was the first of her career.
