Durham earn a comfortable win over Fleming

OSHAWA, Ont - A dominant performance gifted the Durham College men's soccer team their first home win of the season as they earned a 3-0 triumph over the Fleming Knights on Tuesday night.

The Lords started off strong with three chances in the opening three minutes, but were unable to capitalize.

Nate Paine (Whitby, Ont.) was causing a threat down the left wing; the second-year midfielder nearly opened the scoring early, but the Knight's keeper denied him.

The Lords finally broke through in the 24th minute when Paine was found unmarked and his low, hard shot went under the keeper for his first goal as a Durham Lord.

Durham continued to dominate proceedings leading into the break, including at the defensive end of the pitch where the Lords held the Knights to just one shot in the opening half, outshooting the Fleming Knights 14-1.

The Lords earned a second goal just two minutes into the second half when Ryan Cullen's (Pickering, Ont.) cross found Jeremy Bangala (Pickering, Ont.) who's thumping header gave Durham a two-goal lead. With the goal, Bangala's season total now sits at five, placing him in first place in the OCAA.

Durham's offensive display led to a third goal in the 57th minute when Ryan Airlie (Whitby, Ont.) found the bottom right corner for his first goal of the year.

The Lords defence stood firm all game getting a second clean sheet of the season.

"I'm very happy to have gotten my first goal in a Lords jersey," said Paine after the match. "It means a lot to me and I'm very thankful that I've been given the opportunities to start and show my potential. Fleming is a good, physical team and they always put up a fight. Now we need to take the positives from today and use them towards Thursday."

Durham now prepares for the Seneca Sting who they welcome to Vaso's Field this Thursday, Sept. 20. Kick-off is set for 8:15 p.m.
