NORTH YORK, Ont. – The Durham Lords women's soccer team will play for bronze after falling 3-0 to the Fanshawe Falcons in the OCAA championships semifinal on Friday afternoon.
Madison Haigh (Bowmanville, Ont.) had the first quality chance of the game in the ninth minute but her shot went just over the bar.
Fanshawe's top scorer Jade Kovacevic had a couple chances from free kicks, but one went wide and
Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.) made a good save on the other as the Lords did a good job to keep her quiet throughout the half as the sides were goalless at the break.
The Falcons eventually took the lead in the 58
th minute from a penalty when Nicole Nielsen converted from the spot.
Nielsen got her second of the game shortly after and just six minutes later got her hat-trick, which sealed the victory for Fanshawe.
The Lords put up a valiant effort late in the game to try and get back into it but the Falcons defence withstood Durham's pressure.
Durham's win streak came to an end at seven, but the Lords will battle for bronze tomorrow at 12 p.m. against Seneca.
