OSHAWA, Ont. – Awil Weheliye's (Toronto, Ont.) only basket of the second half was a huge one on Friday night as the buzzer-beater lifted the Durham College men's basketball team to a 59-58 win over the Algonquin Thunder.
With 4.3 seconds on the clock
Alessio Del Gobbo (North York, Ont.) inbounded the ball to
Darian Rowe (Maple, Ont.), who was guarded by multiple Algonquin defenders. With just seconds left he swung the ball out to Weheliye who nailed the pocket three in front of the Lords bench, who swarmed him as the buzzer went and the ball dropped.
Weheliye finished the game with six points after playing only 2:56 against the Thunder, but it was final shot that made all the difference in the game, which Rowe led the Lords in with 16 points.
Aaron Hayles (Pickering, Ont.),
Rashaun Bennett (Scarborough, Ont.) and Del Gobbo also finished the game in double-digits with 12, 12 and 10 points respectively. Del Gobbo added 11 rebounds for a double-double, his third of the season.
Murphy Beya was Algonquin's top scorer with 20 points, while Kristian Charette picked up 17.
Durham and Algonquin were tied 11-11 after the opening quarter, but at halftime the Lords trailed by six, 30-24.
Bennett and Rowe led Durham's third quarter push as they took over the lead, giving them a 45-38 lead with a quarter to play.
The Thunder had Charette and Beya step up in the fourth, but were only able to outscore the Lords by six in the quarter as Weheliye ruined their comeback hopes with his three-point buzzer beater.
Durham is back in action tomorrow as the Lords host the La Cité Coyotes at 6 p.m. at the CRWC.
