The Georgian Grizzlies women's basketball team played their 2017-18 OCAA home opener against the visiting Algonquin Thunder on Friday night at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
It was a tight, competitive game throughout with the Grizzlies holding the lead through most of the game. In the fourth quarter the Thunder rallied a comeback putting up 25 points in the final frame to defeat the Grizzlies 64-59.
Rookie Hannah Sweet played the first regular season game of her collegiate career and was impressive leading the Grizzlies with 17 points.
Fellow Barrie native and rookie McKenzie Howlett was also strong playing the full 40 minutes and putting up 16 points while leading the team in rebounds with seven.
The young Georgian squad, which had three rookies in its starting five and six first-year players in total, demonstrated they will be a team who battles until the final horn.
The Grizzlies will be back in action next Friday night when they host the Seneca Sting at 6 p.m. at the Georgian Athletic Centre. Tickets are available at the door for $5. Students can pick up tickets for FREE in advance at the Georgian Athletic Centre.
