Lords season ends with loss to Mohawk in crossover game

Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – After a silver medal finish last season, the Durham College women's volleyball team looked to clinch a spot at the OCAA Championship as they hosted a crossover game against the Mohawk Mountaineers. The Lords season came to an end after the match in four sets (23-25, 17-25, 25-20, 17-25).

This is the first time since 2012 the Lords have not qualified for the championship but with a young squad featuring seven freshmen, the future looks bright for the rebuilding squad.

Durham met Mohawk on the court twice this year, both in exhibition play. At the Niagara Invitational, the Mountaineers found victory in four sets over the Lords, before defeating them by the same score in January's Adidas Cup at Durham College.

The hosts led by as much as six points in what was for the most part a close opening set – trading leads back and forth once both sides surpassed 20 points. However, Mohawk would come out on top 25-23.

Mohawk came out strong to begin the second set scoring nine of the first 13 points and that fire proved difficult for the Lords to put out as Mohawk won 25-17 to win their second of as many sets.

Durham displayed a serious level of effort throughout the match as they weren't ready to see their season finish and picked up a 25-20 victory in the third set to cut the deficit to one. Unfortunately for the Lords, Allyson Terwillegar (Enniskillen, Ont.), who had been Durham's most productive player heading into the playoffs, left the game with an injury and did not return.

The Mountaineers found a way to bounce back in the fourth set and came out on top with a 25-17 win to take the match 3-1 and advance to the OCAA Championship in Scarborough.

Sarah Rayment (Whitby, Ont.) led the way for the Lords with 11 kills. Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) and Devyn Fraser (Uxbridge, Ont.) were forces on the defensive side with a combined 24 digs.

Terwillegar and Jessica Joensen (Pickering, Ont.) had nine and seven kills respectively while Kelsey Kovar had a game high 15 kills.

The Lords finished the year with 20 overall wins for the third consecutive year.

With seven of eleven players on the roster at season's end competing in their first year of college eligibility, one of the youngest lineups in the Ontario Collegiate Athletics Association (OCAA) will have more experience under their belts for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
