DC keep pace with first place Georgian in tight loss

OSHAWA, Ont. - Buoyed by a boisterous Durham crowd as part of the annual pots and pans game, started with the theme of "making noise for mental health," the Durham Lords men's volleyball team came up just short in a tightly contested four-set loss versus the first place Georgian Grizzlies on Thursday night. Set scores for the contest were 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 23-25.

After a thrilling first-set upset of the conference leaders, the Lords proved to be a worthy opponent as they remained within striking distance of the Grizzlies throughout the remaining three sets of action. Playing disciplined volleyball, Durham took advantage of Georgian mistakes as the Grizzlies committed 15 errors to just six for the Lords, and 19 service errors to 12 from Durham.

However, down the stretch of the final three sets Georgian would not be denied their 12th win of the season, taking advantage of timely blocks well place serves.

The Lords continue to battle valiantly night-in and night-out, and they will look to do the same this Saturday, Jan. 26 when they challenge the Centennial Colts at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre. First serve for the match is scheduled for 3 p.m., with those in attendance having an opportunity to win a number of fantastic prizes courtesy of Sky Zone Trampoline Park Whitby, including a 365-day bounce pass.
  • Combining for 26 points in the exciting four set match, Lords scoring leader Tyler Krabi (Stouffville, Ont.) and fellow outside hitter Dalton Halligan (Cobourg, Ont.) impressed the enthusiastic home crowd. Krabi ended the night with 10 kills and three blocks, while Halligan recorded a team-high 11 kills and two blocks.
• Three Grizzlies players registered double-digit points led by an impressive game-high 26 from Darien Haynes, notching 15 kills, one ace and 10 blocks.
  • Fourth-year setter Kyler Woodburne (Bowmanville, Ont.) tallied 29 assists in guiding the Lords offence.
• Serving as the teams libero in the four set matchup, Jacob Haslam led Durham defensively with a season-high 17 digs.
• Georgian setter Liam Gray recorded 30 assists in the victory, while also registering a team-high 13 digs.
