Lords split baseball home opener against Hawks

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham Lords split their doubleheader against the Humber Hawks to begin OCAA regular season action with a 1-0 victory and an 8-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Durham's Alec Brown (Bowmanville, Ont.) and Humber's Dylan Perego. Neither side could solve the pitchers until a sacrifice fly by Ryan Bothwell (Napanee, Ont.) sent Connor May (Oshawa, Ont.) across home plate for the first and only run of the game.

Brown pitched the complete game, only giving up three hits and a single walk while striking out eight. His eight strikeouts was a career high, beating his personal best of seven set last year on two different occasions on the road against both Seneca and Humber. Brown started the game off strong retiring six consecutive batters through the first two innings.

Offensively, Logan Stewart (Linday, Ont.) led the way at the plate with two hits in three at-bats. May and Braden Weir (Whitby, Ont.) also earned a hit in the game.

The second half of the doubleheader was not as fortunate defensively for the Lords, dropping the game by an 8-2 scoreline. Durham kept the game tight for the vast majority of the game as they were only trailing 2-1 heading into the sixth inning. In the final two innings, Humber broke out offensively and added six more runs to their total.

Bothwell stood out for the Lords offensively, recording two hits and two runs in three at-bats.

Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.) pitched six innings for the Lords, giving up five earned runs on nine hits. While only walking four, Harkness threw some heat and struck out six during his performance. Nathaniel Doring-Abbott (Courtice, Ont.) was brought in for the final inning to round out the game, conceding three runs and striking out one.

Having split the series, Durham begins the season with a 1-1 record. The Lords will head south of the border again on Wednesday, Sept. 13 for a pair of exhibition games against Erie Community College. They will return to OCAA action on Saturday, Sept. 16 as they host the Fanshawe Falcons (2-0). The last time Fanshawe was at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium they were crowned national champions.
