Durham drops OCAA quarter-final versus No. 11 Humber

ANCASTER, Ont. - The Durham Lords women's soccer team were unable to defend their bronze medal as they fell 3-0 to the No. 11 nationally ranked Humber Hawks on Wednesday evening in the quarter-final round of the 2019 OCAA provincial championship, hosted by Redeemer University College.

Humber had the first chance of the game in the 20th minute when Catarina Medeiros sent a dangerous shot on net, but CCAA athlete of the week Kerrington Steed (Courtice, Ont.) made a great save.

Durham then went back the other way just minutes later through top scorer Makayla Rudder (Scarborough, Ont.), but her shot was saved by Hawks keeper Vanessa Fiore.

Steed came up with another big save in the 28th minute to keep Durham and Humber in a stalemate. Steed would make an impressive 19 total saves in the quarter-final contest, being named the player of the match for the Lords

The nationally ranked Hawks eventually broke through though in the 37th minute when Claudia Piazza's long-range free kick sailed just over the fingertips of Steed into the top corner. DC would enter the half down 1-0

Following the break, Humber continued to dominate possession and scoring opportunities as they outshot the Lords 22-3 in the match. This led to the Hawks adding two more second half goals to secure their place in the semifinals, eliminating the Lords from medal contention.

Despite being knocked out of the provincial tournament the 2019 season was another successful campaign for the Lords. Durham ended the season with a minimum of seven regular season wins and a spot at the OCAA championship for the third consecutive season, while scoring 30 goals this fall.

Overall Record: 9-7-0 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 7-2-0
