Lords win home opener against Loyalist

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's soccer team earned their first win of 2016 on Thursday night with a 1-0 victory over Loyalist.

Rachel Baumgaertner of Waterloo scored the game winner for Durham in the 70th minute. The animal care major intercepted a Loyalist pass and cut towards the middle of the pitch. With a defender closing the gap and from about 30 yards out, Baumgaertner kicked a left footed bullet that deflected off the sprawling goalkeeper and in the back of the net.

Four minutes prior to the go-ahead goal, Durham goalkeeper Heather Travis (Oakville, Ont.) came up with a leaping save off a Lancer corner kick that preserved the scoreless draw at the time.

Durham was able to hold off the Lancer attack for the final 20 minutes to go on and earn their first points of the season.

Travis made four saves including three in second half as she recorded her first career OCAA shutout. Hannah Baker made four saves for Loyalist in the loss.

The match was evenly played with Loyalist outshooting Durham 17-15.

Durham (1-2) moves into a tie for fourth place in the OCAA east region with the Centennial Colts (1-2). Loyalist falls to 0-2 to start the season.

The Lords will be back in action on Saturday when they make the trip up the 115 to Peterborough to take on the Fleming Knights. Game time at the Fleming Sport Complex is 1 p.m.
