Durham locks up third place with a split against Humber

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – In what could be a possible OCAA championship first round match-up, the Durham College baseball team split their doubleheader with the Humber Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Durham (11-7) locked up third place in the OCAA standings as they are two games ahead of the Fanshawe Falcons who they swept in conference play. Humber wrapped up regular season play with a 15-5 record and will have to wait and see what the St. Clair Saints (14-4) do in their regular season finale against Seneca (Sunday).

Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, Ont.), who pitched a no-hitter against Fanshawe two weeks ago, threw another gem in game one as he allowed just one run off of seven hits and one walk. The Lords veteran recorded eight strikeouts in the win.

Humber starter Steven Hough was just as impressive as he threw seven innings allowing two earned runs off of just two Durham hits.

Hough (1.80 ERA) and Harkness (1.85 ERA) are first and second in OCAA ERA this season.

Heading into the top of the seventh tied 1-1, Ryan Bothwell (Napanee, Ont.) scored on a one-out error with Dylan Norton (Prince Edward County, Ont.) at the dish.

In game two, Humber would walk off with the win as Justin Marra had a one-out single to drive in Liam Sutherland to break up a 3-3 tie.

Logan Stewart (Lindsay, Ont.) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in the final three innings of work. Matt Stoddart picked up the win, allowing one run in his lone inning of work.

Brian Wowk (Oshawa, Ont.) and Alec Brown (Bowmanville, Ont.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. The Lords were able to get nine hits but left eight runners on base in the loss.

Durham will conclude the regular season on Tuesday against the Sting at Kinsmen Civic Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 6/8 p.m.

The OCAA Championship is set for Oct. 20-21 in Tecumseh, Ont. hosted by the St. Clair Saints.
