Lords win first conference game, home opener over Seneca

OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's basketball team has cracked the win column after winning their home opener 76-61 over the Seneca Sting on Tuesday night.

The first two minutes of the game were slow, but both teams started to heat up halfway through the quarter as the Lords were unable to prevent the Sting from getting easy points in the paint, but at the other end of the court Seneca struggled to keep up with Durham's ball movement. After one quarter the Lords led 18-17.

Seneca continued to push into the paint for the majority of their points, but as the second quarter progressed Durham managed to get multiple defensive stops before the ball entered the paint. The Lords pushed the ball on the fast break and repeatedly scored before the Sting could get back on defence.

The Sting adjusted to Durham's defence late in the quarter as Seneca had Allister Rivers and Tevin Goodridge hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the game 31-31. Darian Rowe (Maple, Ont.) led the Lords at the break with 12 points.

Durham continued to defend the paint in the second half and it was working well. Seneca repeatedly forced the ball inside, which caused turnovers that led to fast break points for the Lords. Heading into the final quarter of play Durham was leading 56-50.

The Lords hit a three to start the fourth and never looked back as they led by double digits for the majority of the quarter and went on to defeat the Seneca Sting 76-61.

Rowe led Durham with a career-high 27 points, while Alessio Del Gobbo (North York, Ont.) added 17 points and finished with a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double.

The Seneca Sting were led by Malik Richards' team-high 12 points and Tevin Goodridge's eight points and seven rebounds.
