Box Score NORTH BAY, Ont. - The Durham College women's volleyball team left the OCAA women's volleyball championship today with a fourth place finish, the first time since 2005 and 2006 the Lords have had a final four finish in back-to-back seasons.
Durham opened the bronze medal match with a 25-22 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons, but battled back with a dominant 25-18 second set win. The third set was back and forth with the Lords eventually edging the Falcons 26-24.
The fourth was more even play as they traded points, but with the match tied 20-20 the Lords allowed Fanshawe to take five straight points for a 25-20 set win.
In the fifth Durham was unable to contain the Falcons momentum as they rolled to their bronze medal victory with a 15-5 set win.
With the Lords starting setter
Megan Romain (Ajax, Ont.) sidelined for the bronze medal game with the flu, Durham went with backup setter
Erinn Marshall (Orillia, Ont.). Midway through the match the Lords made a substitution to bring libero
Camille Lefaive (Whitby, Ont.) in as a setter.
Emily Hacker (Cobourg, Ont.) had started the match as libero.
"I'm really proud of how hard our girls worked all weekend, especially with a few of them having to step into different roles on the court," said head coach
Tony Clarke. "Given all the circumstances I think it was a positive weekend for our team."
Player of the game for Durham,
Kristen Curtis (Frankford, Ont.) finished the match with seven blocks and four kills.
Allison Marshall (Orillia, Ont.), who was named a championship all-star, led the Lords offence with 11 kills and six aces, while adding two blocks.
Stephanie Larose (Whitby, Ont.) added eight.
In her final game as a Lord,
Jessica Broad (Courtice, Ont.) had seven kills and four blocks.
Fanshawe's player of the game, Carly Nugteren, finished with 14 kills and three service aces.
Durham finished the season with an overall record of 22-6, while winning the OCAA east division with a 19-1 conference record.
Following the bronze medal match, the Humber Hawks swept the Niagara Knights to win their ninth straight title.
