Impressive season debut for Durham College softball

LONDON, Ont. – The defending OCAA champion Durham College women's softball team got their season off to a great start in London on Saturday with a two-game sweep over the Fanshawe Falcons.

Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) went the distance in the game one victory, working alongside Durham's stingy defence that kept Fanshawe's hitters at bay.

Sabrina Stalteri (Vaughan, Ont.) got Durham on the board early by using her speed. After a single, Stalteri stole second and third that set her up to score on a passed ball. The Lords would trade runs with Fanshawe in the fifth and sixth innings, while shutting down the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh.

Cassidy Scott (Brampton, Ont.), Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.), Caleigh Coels (Duncan, B.C.), Black and Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) all had a hit in the win.

In game two, Emily Hill won her first game as a Lord as she pitched a complete game, allowing six hits while striking out two.

McKnight, Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) and Hill had hot bats each getting two hits apiece.

Fanshawe's Ali Bergman had a big hit in the sixth inning that tied the game at 4-4, however when she was trying to stretch it to a triple, she was thrown out by McKnight.

In the top half of the seventh inning, McKnight led things off with a triple and was cashed in by a Stalteri sac fly. Clarke would score later in the inning.

Durham is 2-0 to start the season and will have a doubleheader against the always-tough St. Clair Saints in Windsor on Sunday.
