Lords lose marathon to Humber in 11 innings, split doubleheader

OSHAWA, Ont. – It took 11 innings, but eventually the Humber Hawks walked away with a split at Durham Field as the Hawks defeated the Lords 15-14 in a three-hour tilt on Thursday night.

Bonnie Gillingham was the hero for Humber, with her sac fly allowing Emily Erskine to score from third base. Erskine had started from second base due to the international extra inning rule.

Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) took the loss for Durham after pitching the entirety of the game, while Bree Donaldson was the fourth Humber Hawk into the game and earned the victory after a few innings of work.

After sitting tied 8-8 through seven innings, both teams scored two in the eighth to send it to the ninth. Humber had a huge top of the ninth, bringing in four runs to lead 14-10, but on a few errors the Lords were able to rally and tie the game again 14-14.

Black had a solid 10th inning, shutting down the Hawks offence to open the window for Durham College to win, but in the bottom half of the inning Humber's defence also stood strong and shut down the Lords setting up the 11th inning – which saw the Hawks finally end the game.

To open the night, Emily Hill (Ohsweken, Ont.) earned her second win of the season after going seven innings in a 5-1 victory. She allowed only one run on two hits, while striking out six.

At the plate Nicole Mancini (Scarborough, Ont.) finished the night 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Lords' offence, while Melissa McKnight (Brampton, Ont.) also had a great night going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

For Humber, Rachel Matheson-Green took the loss. She went 5 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out three. In relief, Donaldson went one inning. She allowed one earned run on two hits.

At the plate, former Lord Samantha MacCallum had Humber's lone RBI as she was 1-for-3 on the night.

The Lords will hit the road next week for a pair of games. On Tuesday they are in Kitchener to face the Conestoga Condors before travelling to North York on Thursday night to battle the Seneca Sting. First pitch of both doubleheaders is 6 p.m.
