OSHAWA, Ont. – Bruce Cullen (Pickering, Ont.) was dialed in on Wednesday as he finished with three goals and an assist in Durham College's 5-1 victory over the Centennial Colts.
The Lords captain opened the scoring in the match in the 14
th minute, but Centennial wouldn't be outdone as Liam Cox scored the equalizer just four minutes later.
In the 24
th minute, after a handball in the box, Cullen capitalized on the PK to give his team the lead again. Centennial continued to match Durham's play and
Dylan Yeo (Newmarket, Ont.) had to make an outstanding save in the 31
st minute to keep the one-goal advantage. The pressure from the Colts continued as they rang a shot off both posts in the 34
th minute – but Yeo had the help of his defenders to clear the ball from the box and prevent any rebound from Centennial.
The great offensive chances continued and in the 40
th minute after a Colts foul, Cullen curved Durham's free kick opportunity into the 18-yard box where he connected with his brother
Ryan Cullen (Pickering, Ont.) who headed the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the season.
As if his ball placement on the free kick wasn't impressive enough, Cullen completed his hat trick with an absolute laser from centre field over the Colts keeper, who found himself high off his line and out of position, and into the top corner.
At halftime the No. 9 ranked Lords were out-chancing the Colts 15-11 and led the match 4-1.
In the second half another handball in the box led to
Stephane Ahanda scoring in the 74
th minute on a PK.
Centennial may have out-chanced the Lords in the second half and the game 24-20, but Ahanda's goal would be the last of the match as the Lords finished with the decisive 5-1 victory.
This Friday the No. 9 ranked Lords will host the No. 12 ranked Seneca Sting at Vaso's Field. Kick off is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
