Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. – On a night where two OCAA championship winning teams were celebrated, the Durham College women's basketball team had championship caliber performance as they beat the Loyalist Lancers 90-57.
At halftime of the game the Durham College men's soccer and women's softball OCAA championship teams were honoured and their banners unveiled at centre court. It was the first title for the men's soccer program in 20 years and third straight title for softball – also their record 19th in OCAA history.
As part of the Bell Let's Talk campaign, the theme of the night was Make Some Noise for Mental Health. Fans were encouraged to bring pots and pans to "make some noise for mental health" and support the Bell Let's Talk movement in raising awareness about mental health.
Despite the lopsided final score, Loyalist actually led after 10 minutes after outscoring Durham 21-16.
Durham turned things around in the second quarter taking a 42-32 lead into the break. The Lords continued to dominate in the third quarter as they outscored Loyalist 28-8 and ended up cruising to the win over the final ten minutes of play.
Durham's pressure defence was the key to victory as they outscored Loyalist 21-5 on points off of turnovers. The Lords had 14 steals led by
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.) who had four.
Three-point shooting was also a strength for Durham as they were 13-for-25 from beyond the arc.
Maddie Dender (Ajax, Ont.), Glendinning,
Dekota Kirby (Markham, Ont.) and
Victoria Brody (Scarborough, Ont.) all had three three-pointers.
Dender led all scorers with 21 points and Glendinning had 19. Kirby had a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists while
Keisha Arthurworrey (Oshawa, Ont.) was two points shy of one with eight points and 12 boards.
Katie Wiggins had 15 points for the Lancers.
Durham (6-6) moves two points ahead of the Lancers (5-6) for third place in the OCAA east region standings. St. Lawrence (5-6) and Centennial (5-7) are also two points back of the Lords.
The Lords will be back on the court a week from tonight as they take on the first place George Brown Huskies (10-1) in Toronto. Game time on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
