Lords wrap up 2017 at 5-5

Box Score OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College women's basketball team will head into the holiday break with a 5-5 record after dropping an 84-65 decision to the undefeated George Brown Huskies Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre.

George Brown leads the way in the OCAA east region with a 9-0 record, two games ahead of the 7-2 Seneca Sting. Durham is in third place at 5-5, with Loyalist and Centennial close behind with matching 4-4 records.

After the Huskies took a 14-8 lead after ten minutes, Aprille Deus took over the game scoring 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter that included sinking four three-pointers. The Lords would combine to score one-less point than Deus in the quarter as George Brown took a commanding 36-23 lead at the break.

George Brown would come out strong once again in the third quarter, going on an early 9-0 run to take a 45-24 lead. The Lords fight back with a 9-0 run of their own, but a pair of three-pointers by Tressa Beltran in the fourth quarter would secure the Huskies' ninth straight win.

The Lords struggled from the floor in the first half shooting just 22 per cent including going 1-for-10 from beyond the three-point line. Things would improve for Durham in the second half as they shot 41 per cent, but George Brown would end up shooting 56 per cent.

Keisha Arthurworrey (Oshawa, Ont.) managed to score a team-high 13 points in 16 minutes of court time, going 5-for-7 while hauling in eight rebounds. Victoria Brody (Scarborough, Ont.) would also score 13 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Deus would end up with 21 points while Sullivan drained 19 in the George Brown victory.

2018 will not get any easier for the Lords as their first two games in 2018 are against the Sting and Huskies on the road. Their next home game is not until Jan. 24 when they host the Loyalist Lancers.
