Women's soccer clinch home playoff game

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham Lords women's soccer team claimed another win on Friday evening as they beat the Fleming Knights 3-1 at Vaso's Field in their 2019 home finale.

At the conclusion of the match Durham recognized their graduating athletes: Carina Konstantinou (Hamilton, Ont.), Kerrington Steed (Courtice, Ont.), Sydney Zeller (Peterborough, Ont.), Jenna King (Ajax, Ont.), Cory Lapointe (Whitby, Ont.), and MacKenzie Barry (Ajax, Ont.).

Fleming took an early lead just two minutes in when Mallory Wheeler's shot deflected on its way in to make it 1-0.

The lead didn't last long though as the Lords tied the game up just three minutes later when Lapointe crossed the ball to Makayla Rudder (Scarborough, Ont.) who tapped home from close range.

The dynamic striking duo of Lapointe and Rudder would strike again in the 39th minute. Lapointe would tap home a rebound from a Rudder shot which hit the post. The marker was the fourth goal of the season for Lapointe.

First-year forward Kaelin Wright (Ajax, Ont.) then nearly added an insurance marker for the Lords when she was played through on goal by Natassha Hassenstein (Oshawa, Ont.), but her shot rung off the underside of the crossbar and out.

A safety net goal would come though when Rudder would get her second of the game and eighth of the season in the 75th minute when she tapped home again from another Lapointe cross.

King earned the win in net for the Lords with three saves in the victory.

Durham are now guaranteed third place in the OCAA eastern division. They will play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday. Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. against the Loyalist Lancers and then host the fifth place team from the west in an OCAA crossover match. Date, time and opponent for the playoff crossover will be announced at a later time.
  Overall Record: 7-6-0 (W-L-D)
Conference Record: 6-2-0

Next match: Tuesday, Oct. 15 @ Loyalist Lancers (6 p.m. - Belleville, Ont.)
