Women's rugby set for first-ever conference matches

OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College woman's rugby team is ready for their Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) debut.

Kick off for their inaugural conference match is 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Thompson Rugby Park in Raglan against the Fleming Knights.

"We're excited to get women's rugby underway here at Durham," said Durham College athletic director Ken Babcock. "The addition of women's rugby and return of men's rugby shows we're growing here on campus and we look forward to these programs joining in the success of the others at Durham College. The first year of conference play is always a special one and we look forward to how we will fit in the mix in our first official season."

As hosts of the OCAA east region tournament on Saturday, the Lords will play four games in the day, while hosting a full day of OCAA competition.

After their opening match the Lords will take on the Loyalist Lancers at 11 a.m., Algonquin Thunder at 1:30 p.m. and finish the day by facing the St. Lawrence Vikings at 3 p.m.

"The sevens format really allows us to have a great atmosphere that day," said head coach Chris McKee. "I'm sure there will be some nerves for the players playing their first conference games, especially at home, but it will be a great day and celebration as we join the OCAA and face four great opponents."

The Lords played host to Fleming last year in three exhibition matches at Thompson Park. After losing two of their three matches last year, the Lords are hoping for a strong start against the Knights to open their first-ever year of conference play.
