OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College women's softball team had a flair for the dramatic on Tuesday night as the Lords earned both victories over the Mohawk Mountaineers with walk-offs in both games.
Ashley Black (Waterloo, Ont.) got the start for the Lords in the first game of the doubleheader. Pitching the full seven innings, Black gave up 10 hits, but struck out five and walked two.
Durham's bats were alive right out of the gates, pushing two runs across home plate in the opening inning to give the Lords an early lead.
Cassidy Scott (Brampton, Ont.) scored the opening run after recording a single and stolen base. Not long after, a hit from
Ashley Wallace (Coldwater, Ont.) sent
Jaimie Clarke (Elmvale, Ont.) across for the second run of the game.
The Mountaineers were quick to reply with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the second, but Black worked her way out of the inning as Mohawk left two runners stranded on base.
Mohawk continued their scoring run into the third inning, adding another pair of runs, but Durham began to claw back as
Sarah Seifried (Drayton, Ont.) brought the score within a single run before
Ashley Wallace (Coldwater, Ont.) evened the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Mohawk opened the seventh with a run to grab a 5-4 lead. Durham replied back quickly with a run to tie the game before another came through to give the Lords the 6-5 victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Durham scored early again as the Lords led 1-0 heading into the third inning where Clarke would make it 2-0 with a solo inside-the-park home run.
First-year student-athlete
Emily Glendinning (Plattsville, Ont.) pitched 3.2 innings before being pulled with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the fourth. Coming off a perfect game last Friday, Glendinning allowed no runs one three hits and three walks in her outing.
Emma Greer (Peterborough, Ont.) entered the game in relief and got the Lords out of the jam before going 2.1 innings and allowing five runs on seven hits. Black came in to close the game, going one inning and walking one batter.
The Mountaineers turned the game around after trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning with an inside-the-park home run of their own to take a 5-3 lead. The two-run deficit did not last for long however, as Durham would tie things up heading into the final inning.
With the game tied 5-5 going into the bottom half of the seventh, the Lords had an opportunity to walk it off again. Clarke did just that as she hit a single for the second walk-off of the night.
With their pair of wins, the Lords improved their regular season record to 6-2 heading into their doubleheader at Durham Field against the Humber Hawks on Thursday night.
