OSHAWA, Ont. – The Durham College men's rugby team has moved into top spot in the OCAA east region after a convincing 36-19 victory over the Algonquin Thunder in their final home game on Saturday afternoon.
For the Lords, who made their return to the OCAA this year for the first time since 1996, how the team would match up against other schools wasn't certain.
"I'm extremely happy with how our group has come together and continued to learn and improve through this season," said head coach
John Watkins. "We know the playoffs will be a completely new experience and test for the team, but our current focus is a strong finish on Wednesday in our final game against the Lancers."
James Stockwood (Bowmanville, Ont.) scored three tries to lead the Lords offence on the day. Heading into the match he had two over the Lords first four games.
The remainder of Durham's tries were scored by
Daniel Cooper (Uxbridge, Ont.),
Hayden Parkins (Oshawa, Ont.) and
John Stewart (Whitby, Ont.) – all with one each.
Jordan McGranachan (Ajax, Ont.) kicked three converts for the Lords.
With one game remaining on Wednesday against the Loyalist Lancers, the Lords will look to solidify first place.
Kick off against the Lancers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Overall Record: 4-1 (W-L)
Conference Record: 4-1
Next match: Wednesday, Oct. 17 @ Loyalist Lancers • 7 p.m. – Belleville, Ont.
