Sluggish first half costs men's soccer in loss to UTM

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - The Sheridan Bruins men's soccer team (4-3 OCAA) got off to a slow start, and even though they applied significant pressure in the second, they were unable to pull level in a 1-0 loss to UTM.

"It's kinda what we've talked about all season. We need to start getting full intensity from the first minute until the 90th. I don't think we got that tonight, and it cost us," head coach Andrew Seuradge said. "We beat them pretty handily a week ago, and I definitely think that factored into the performances tonight. They looked like a team that wanted to prove something, and we looked like a team that thought they already had. That's going to require an attitude adjustment for us moving forward."

After the Bruins scored five goals in the second half to beat UTM 6-1 a week ago, the home side looked ever determined to produce a more postive result this time.

It produced an early chance in the eighth minute, but Jesse Bibby was able to clear the ball off the line and away from danger.

UTM would strike 10 minutes later, however, catching the Bruins on the counter attack to take a 1-0 lead.

They a handful of other quality chances throughout the opening 45 minutes, but couldn't capitalize and the Double-Blue was fortunate to get to the interval only down one.

In the second half, Sheridan monopolized possession of the ball and created several chances - including a 75th minute penalty kick that UTM keeper Aaron Peters made a tremendous diving save on - but lacked the finish touch they've displayed in bursts this season.

"We need to start bringing our level up right from kickoff and maintaining it until the final whistle," Seuradge said. "We always seem to find a way to play at level of our competition, whether that's up or down. We need to start setting the tone and let other teams try and match our level."

The Bruins will play their final home game when they host Conestoga on Oct. 10 (4:30pm).
